Turn your kid’s quotes into a book

5 min read · Updated November 5, 2026

A book of the things your child said is one of the few keepsakes that gets better with age. Photos show what they looked like. Their words show how they thought. Here’s how to go from scattered notes to something you can put on a shelf, and later hand to them.

1. Gather every line

Look in the usual places: texts to yourself or your partner, your notes app, photo captions, social media drafts, the back of a receipt in your bag. Ask your partner and grandparents too; they often remember lines you missed.

2. Give each line a date and an age

This is what turns a list of quotes into a story. Use the day it was said, or the month if that’s all you know, and work out your child’s age at the time. In a book, “2 years 3 months” next to a line tells the reader exactly where that child was.

Example page4 years
How old is Mom?

“Twenty. Grandma is a hundred.”

3. Keep their words exactly

Resist the urge to clean things up. “Aminal,” “I runned,” and logic that doesn’t quite work are the whole point. Add a short line of context underneath if the quote needs it.

4. Put it in order

Sort by date. Group by year of age (“At two,” “At three”) or by calendar year. If you asked the same question more than once, say on each birthday, put the answers side by side. Watching an answer change from year to year is often the best page in the book.

5. Pick a format

FormatGood forWatch out for
Printed PDFFast and cheap. Print at home or at any print shop and bind it simply.Looks plain unless the PDF is already laid out.
Photo book serviceHardcover, nice paper, mixes quotes with photos.Laying out pages by hand takes a while; text-heavy books can look sparse.
Hand-made notebookPersonal; your handwriting becomes part of the gift.Only one copy, and it takes the most time.

6. Keep the file, and make it a habit

Keep a digital copy so you can reprint, make a second copy for a grandparent, or add next year. Many families make one small book a year, around the birthday.

The short way: let the journal make the book

If you keep the quotes in Daysake as they happen, steps 1 to 4 are already done. Each page has the date and your child’s age, the birthday answers sit side by side, and Download everything gives you one PDF with every page in order, plus your photos if you want them. Print that PDF wherever you like. Downloading is always free.
